Having double vision can be frustrating to live with, but you can get the problem corrected by an optometrist. There are a few different things that can go wrong with your eyes to cause double vision. What Causes Someone to Have Double Vision?
There are many aspects to your eyes working together to help you see things clearly. If a problem exists with one of the areas, it can lead to you having double vision. The cornea is one important part of your eyes because it is in place to focus light that is sent to the retina. The retina requires light in order for the images you see to become clear. The retina triggers nerves that communicate with the brain to make your eyes functional.
If the cornea is not shaped right, it is what can cause double vision. You may experience cornea problems in a single eye that can make it seem as though both of your eyes are damaged. You can tell which of the corneas is damaged by covering each of them one at a time to locate the one causing double vision. An optometrist can perform a series of tests to diagnose the problem and treat it by prescribing eyeglasses.
What Kind of Tests Can an Optometrist Provide to Diagnose Double Vision?
The first thing the optometrist may do to diagnose double vision is inspect the shape of your eye corneas. A device known as a keratoscope is used to examine each cornea in an attempt to find irregularities. The test is fast and painless, so it is nothing to be afraid of.
The next part of the examination will be the Visual Acuity Assessment, commonly known as the eye chart test. The eye chart test is also simple because you will only be required to stand at a distance from the chart and read alphabets. The optometrist will observe to see how well you can see the alphabets, which are strategically placed on the chart in multiple sizes.
After the tests have all been performed, the optometrist will find a lens that corrects the double vision problem. You will simple read the alphabet chart again, but through an optical refractor machine. The machine is equipped with different several lenses of from weak to strong strengths. You will be written a prescription and can then purchase eyeglasses so you can see clearly!
