The Importance Of Warming Up

Julio Carr

Whether you are a weekend warrior or a professional athlete, warming up is crucial to your overall health. Warming up has many benefits, such as making exercise easier. Here is what you need to know about warming up.

Why Warm Up?

Warming up helps to open up the joints and increases the blood flow to the muscles throughout your body. When your joints are open, it is as if they have been lubricated. As a result, you can move easier through your workout routine.

An additional benefit to working out is that you feel less worn after a workout. Working out cold can put a strain on your body which forces it to work harder to get through your athletic activity. Extra soreness can leave you feeling less than ready to take on another day of physical activity. It can also result in injury.

You also run the risk of burning out before you have finished working out. When you start out at full speed and have not properly warmed up, your body expends a lot of energy trying to supply you with what you need to work out. As you continue to work out, the supply of energy that your body has left decreases which leaves you too worn to finish your workout.

What Is the Best Way to Warm Up?

Warming up is not an overly complicated task. A good workout can loosen up your bones, joints, and muscles and get you mentally ready for your routine. It also brings up your heart rate which gets the blood flowing.

A great way to warm up is to walk for three to five minutes. You are not trying to win a race. Simply walk gently for that time period. The idea is to improve the flow of blood and loosen up your muscles. It also tells your brain to prepare for physical activity.

After a few minutes of walking, slowly jog for a few minutes. Do not overexert yourself. Once you have jogged, it is time to do some stretching. Stretching can be as simple as skipping or lifting your legs in front of you while flexing your toes.

Even if you are a professional athlete, it is important that you do not skip a warm-up. Not only will it protect you from injury, but it will also give you the mental boost you need to get in the right frame of mind for physical activity.
