Two Ways To Increase The Usage Of Your Patient Portal

Julio Carr

It would seem that patient portals, which are secure websites that allow healthcare patients to view their medical information online from virtually anywhere, would be wildly popular.  However, a recent survey indicated that 64 percent of Americans do not use patient portals. If you are a doctor or other medical professional, you are likely looking for ways to increase the usage of the patient portal that your healthcare facility makes available to your clients.  Use this information to learn more about how to get your patients interested in using the portal.

Outline The Convenience Features

Most people are looking for ways to save time and complete activities as efficiently as possible.  You can use this to your benefit by making your patients aware of just how convenient the portal will be for them.

You can work these convenience features into the conversation in a very natural manner.  For example, if your patient says that they were put on hold when they called to set their appointment, casually let them know that they can make appointments via the portal twenty-four hours a day without even having to call in.  Also, if you are giving your patient a prescription that will require authorization for a refill, make sure they know that they can request the refill online through the portal and you will authorize it on your end in no time.

Once your patients understand how convenient the portal is for them, it should encourage more of them to become acquainted with it.

Remind Your Patients That The Portal Exists

Another great way to increase the number of your patients who use the portal is to remind them that it even exists!  Of the 64 percent of surveyed Americans who don't use a patient portal, nearly half of them didn't even know that the portal was available.

There are a number of ways to increase the visibility of your portal so that there will be no doubt that your patients know about it.  You can make it a point to include the patient portal link and log-in directions on the back of your own business cards and give one to every patient when they visit you.

You should also post a prominent banner in the waiting room of your hospital or clinic that displays the patient portal link in bright colors that are hard to ignore.

Increasing the usage of your patient portal not only helps patients, but it allows you to free up more time that would have been spent on the phone or in pulling records.  Start using these tips right away so your patients will begin to see the benefits of using the patient portal.
