Common Myths About Labor And Delivery

Julio Carr

Whether this is your first baby, or you have several children at home, chances are one of the aspects of your pregnancy you are dreading the most is labor and delivery. However, before you become too concerned, realize that many of the aspects of labor and delivery that cause the most concern are based upon misinformation and untruths. Here are some of the most common myths and misconceptions about labor and delivery.

Your Contractions Will Start Right After Your Water Breaks

In the movies and on television, when a woman's water breaks, it is very dramatic and is followed by immediate and intense contractions. In reality, when a woman's water breaks, it will often simply trickle out and contractions may start immediately or not for several hours. Some women do not even realize their water has broken until they go into labor and head to the hospital.

When your water breaks, it is not a cause for alarm. Instead, create a plan with your doctor to determine what you will do if your water breaks at home. Many women will have contractions for several hours before their water breaks and their water might even need to be broken at the hospital.

Spicy Foods Will Help Jump Start Your Labor

One of the most common and potentially uncomfortable myths about labor in delivery is that if you are nearing your due date or are overdue, eating some spicy foods will help jumpstart your labor. Some women are also even told by friends and family to drink castor oil. Unfortunately, instead of helping your labor start or progress, spicy foods and castor oil will only leave you with a stomachache and the need to visit the bathroom.

Wider Hips Mean Your Labor Will Be Easier

Another pervasive myth is that women who have wider hips will have an easier time giving birth. However, whether your hips are narrow, wide, or somewhere in between, this factor will play no part in how easy or hard your labor is. There are instead many things that can influence the length of your labor, or if you will wind up having a cesarean section.

If you are concerned about any complications that might impact your labor and delivery, including a past cesarean section, or if you have had difficult labor in the past, talk to your doctor to determine what you can do to make your labor and delivery go more smoothly.
